Beyond Krishna: The Majestic Vishwaroop of Hanumanji – The Avatar of Lord Shiva

HARE KRISHNA!

When we think of the Vishwaroop — the universal form of the Supreme, most minds immediately go to Lord Krishna’s divine revelation to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita. But few know that Hanumanji, the immortal devotee of Shri Ram and an incarnation of Lord Shiva, also manifested a formidable Vishwaroop — one that shook even the realms of the gods.

Yes, you read that right. There is indeed a Vishwaroop of Hanumanji, mentioned in revered scriptures like the Parashara Samhita, Brihaddharma Purana, and various Tantric and Kavach texts. This form is a glorious testament to his status as a manifestation of Mahadev, imbued with the combined power of Narasimha, Varaha, Garuda, Hayagriva, and of course, Hanuman himself.

🕉️ The Vishwaroop of Hanumanji in Parashara Samhita (Chapters 53 & 54)

According to the Parashara Samhita, authored by Maharishi Parashara (father of Ved Vyasji), there’s a thrilling account of Hanumanji manifesting his Vishwaroop when Lord Ram ordered him to retrieve a royal signet ring from Lord Brahma.

When Brahmaji refused, Hanumanji, in righteous anger, assumed a massive, five-faced, twenty-armed form, each hand carrying divine weapons — including the Kaumodeeki mace of Vishnu and Trident of Shiva.

“He increased his form greatly, like the rainy season clouds... with five ferocious faces and twenty mighty arms, he roared like a lion. The entire Brahmaloka appeared like an ant in front of him.”

His eyes faced in all directions (Visvatomukha), his body blazed with divine energy, and even the gods trembled. This was no ordinary display — this was the cosmic face of divinity itself.

In awe and fear, Sanatkumara advised Brahma to offer the ring, and Brahma composed the Maruti Stotram to pacify him.

🐒 Panchmukhi Hanuman: The Five-Faced Divine Form

In this universal form, Hanumanji appeared with five faces:

  • Face of Lord Narasimha (south): Fierce protector, remover of fear.

  • Face of Lord Varaha (north): Lifter of the Earth, giver of wealth.

  • Face of Lord Garuda (west): Destroyer of black magic and snakes.

  • Face of Lord Hayagriva (upwards): Source of knowledge and wisdom.

  • Face of Lord Hanuman (east): Devotion, strength, and selfless service.

This form had 15 eyes (3 per face), radiating with the brilliance of billions of suns, and he wielded 20 weapons including a tree, a mountain, a bow, a drum (damaruka), and even a snake — symbols of supreme command over all forces of nature.

"Prethasanopavishtam... Divya malambaradharam, divya gandhanulepanam"
(He sat on a sacred seat, adorned with divine ornaments and perfumes...)

🔥 Vishwaroop in Brihaddharma Purana: A Terrifying Vision of Cosmic Power

In Brihaddharma Purana (Chapter 18), Hanumanji assumed an enormous, fearsome form in Lanka to prove his identity as an incarnation of Mahadev to Mata Adi Parashakti.

She saw:

  • Millions of demons crushed in his mouth.

  • Entire city of Lanka burning, seen between his eyebrows.

  • Each hair of his body was as large and powerful as himself.

  • Ravana in his right hand, Kumbhakarna in the left, Lakshmana on his forehead, and Sitaji above, gazing at Shri Ram’s feet.

This was no ordinary divine form — this was a celestial canvas of time, space, and divine will.

🔱 Hanumanji's Higher Forms: Saptamukhi and Ekadashmukhi

While Panchmukhi Hanuman is well known, scriptures also reveal Saptamukhi (7-faced) and Ekadashmukhi (11-faced) forms of Hanumanji:

Saptamukhi Hanuman (Seven-Faced)

Mentioned in Atharvana Rahasya and Tantric texts, this form includes additional divine aspects — expanding Hanumanji's authority over different realms of existence.

Ekadashmukhi Hanuman (Eleven-Faced)

Described in tantras and kavach texts, this form is the most powerful, combining energies of multiple deities. Lord Brahma dictated this Kavach to Garuda, who then shared it with humanity.

🪔 Not Just a Devotee — Hanumanji as the Supreme Itself

We often see Hanumanji as Rama Bhakta. But these Vishwaroop manifestations reveal another side — that of the Supreme Controller, the Cosmic Force, just like Krishna showed to Arjuna.

And why not? Hanumanji is:

  • Born from Mahadev's amsha (divine spark).

  • Embodiment of all five elements.

  • Carrier of both Shakti and Bhakti.

  • Immortal, unshakable, and ever-vigilant protector of Dharma.

🙏 Conclusion: Vishwaroop Is Not Limited to One Form

While Lord Krishna’s Vishwaroop is iconic and deeply symbolic of Lord Vishnu’s supremacy, Hanumanji’s Vishwaroop is equally majestic — showing how Shiva’s manifestation can also contain the entire cosmos within.

Hanumanji’s form is a living bridge between Vaishnava and Shaiva traditions, a reminder that the Supreme is one, appearing in many divine aspects.

"Hanuman evokes awe, devotion, and surrender — for he is not just the servant of God, but God manifest in humble form."

Jai Shri Ram! Jai Panchmukhi Hanumanji! Har Har Mahadev!
