Born and raised in a small village in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district, Sujit Chattopadhyay spent 39 years as a teacher, eventually retiring as a school principal at the age of 60. In 2004, fate intervened in the form of three tribal girls who walked 20 kilometers to meet him. They had heard of his prowess as a teacher and sought his guidance. Deeply moved by their determination, he decided to teach them. The only fee he charged? Re 1 per student. This token amount symbolized respect for education rather than a financial burden.
The Birth of ‘Sadai Fakirer Pathshala’
Sujit turned the veranda of his home into a classroom, founding Sadai Fakirer Pathshala. What started as a modest effort soon blossomed into a full-fledged institution. Word spread quickly about this teacher who charged just Re 1 per year, and children from nearby villages flocked to learn from him.
At its peak, his school enrolled as many as 350 students, 80% of whom were tribal girls. His day began at 6 AM and ended at 6 PM, as he tirelessly taught subjects ranging from social sciences for secondary students to Bengali for undergraduates. His school maintained a structured approach, complete with attendance systems and regular parent-teacher meetings.
Transforming Lives
Under his guidance, many of his students went on to achieve remarkable success, becoming professors, heads of departments, and IT professionals. They often reach out to share their achievements, filling Mastar Moshai’s heart with pride. His efforts not only educated these children but also broke the cycle of poverty, empowering generations to come.
Today, the fee has risen to Rs 2 per year—not for inflation, but as a gesture of respect. Even at nearly 80 years old, Sujit Chattopadhyay continues to dedicate his life to education, proving that true heroes work tirelessly, not for fame or wealth, but for the betterment of society.

In November 2021, Sujit Chattopadhyay was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in the field of Literature and Education. This recognition is a testament to his unparalleled contribution to society. Yet, the greatest reward for him is the joy of seeing his students thrive.
